A second, and perhaps obvious, thing to do is to compare the model you are looking to buy with pictures and specs provided online by the manufacturer.  Be sure that they look exactly the same.  If the watch you are looking to buy is different, it is likely fake.  When purchasing a high end watch, you should be researching it's style and functions before you purchase anyway so it should be fairly easy to do.

Third is to look at the brand or logo.  Luxury watches will always have the logo printed on the watch somewhere.  Be sure that the logo is exactly the same and not a clever misspelling or adaptation.  Be sure your "Fendi" watch is not a "Fandi" watch!

Lastly, most luxury watches will come with some sort of documentation of proof.  This can be something like a certificate of authenticity or something similar.  Be sure to ask the retailer for this, although some scammers may have photocopied versions as well. 

It can be easy to be duped if you are careless or unaware.  With a little more caution and care, you can avoid being a victim of being sold a fake watch.  Follow the tips above and you can be sure it does not happen to you.
